Registration and Enrollment Policies

1. Continuous Enrollment Policy: A very significant change has occurred in the University's continuous enrollment policy for graduate students in Fall 07. While University policy has long been that graduate students must remain continually enrolled in their program until all requirements are completed (passing a comprehensive exam or filing a thesis), in reality, an absence of two quarters or less had no impact on the student's ability to register in a subsequent quarter. The University closed this "loophole" effective Fall 07: students must file a leave of absence form if they will not be enrolled, even for a single quarter.

If you do not enroll for one or more quarters AND do not file a leave of absence form, and then wish to return to the program, the University may assess you for the fees due for the quarter(s) you were absent.

Our program will require leave of absence forms to be filed starting with Spring 07, so if you will not be enrolling for next quarter, please contact the coordinator of your concentration as soon as possible.

2. A NEW COURSE: Effective Fall 2006, we began offering a new course, ENG 697: Thesis and Comprehensive Examination Independent Study (4 units, CR/NC). This course replaces our previous use of ENG 696D or 696B for those students who have:
a) completed their course work but have not yet had a thesis proposal approved by the Graduate Committee;
b) been enrolled in the thesis units (ENG 699A/B) but have not yet filed their completed thesis with the Graduate Studies office;
c) completed their coursework and are studying for the comprehensive examination.
Please note that students in categories b) and c) above also have the alternative of enrolling in ENG 698: Continuous Enrollment (0 units) if they prefer. The university requires that all graduate students remain in continuous enrollment until the thesis is filed with the Graduate Studies office or the comprehensive examination is passed. ENG 697 require permission to enroll from the coordinator of your concentration.

3. HOLDS ON REGISTRATION: If you are in conditionally classified status (you were admitted needing prerequisite classes and/or the Graduate Entrance Writing Requirement), an advising hold will be in place for your Spring 07 registration. In order to have the hold lifted, you will need to contact the coordinator of your concentration for advisement and approval of your course selection. If you want to register on time, you'll need to do this before your registration date; allow at least 48 hours (2 business days) for the hold to be lifted. These holds will continue to appear quarterly until the conditions precluding you from classified status are met. Please note that University regulations require that you meet those conditions before you complete 12 graduate units.

4. PERMITS REQUIRED: Permits are required for the following courses (see a-f below). When requesting a permit from your coordinator via e-mail, please include in your message your student identification number (not the course registration number, your student ID number).
a. ENG 662, 663 and 664: Internships in Composition, Literature, or TESL. In order for a permit to be issued for the internship units, you must follow the instructions on the website, acquire a Faculty Mentor, complete the Internship Contract, and provide the required copy to the coordinator of your concentration. Internships must be arranged by the 8th week of the preceding quarter. Please also note that the internship requires regular weekly participation in Blackboard discussion boards and completion of assigned readings, in addition to your work in your Faculty Mentor's class (your grade reflects your completion of all required elements of the internship, including the online component).
b. ENG 695: Beginning in Fall 06, prerequisites for ENG 695 are completion of ENG 609 and 24 units in the program. Request a permit to enroll from your coordinator if you have met these prerequisites.
c. ENG 697: the new CR/NC 4-unit course described above; request a permit to enroll from your coordinator.
d. ENG 698: Continuous Enrollment, 0 units; request a permit to enroll from your coordinator.
e. ENG 699A and/or 699B: the thesis research units. In order to enroll in these units, you must have your thesis proposal approved by the Graduate Committee; request a permit to enroll from your coordinator.
f. ENG 999: Comprehensive Examination, 0 units. Students planning to take the Comprehensive Examination in Spring 07 must meet with the coordinator of their concentration for advising during Winter Quarter and sign a form declaring their intent to take the exam. Prerequisites: ENG 695, advancement to candidacy, approval of the Graduate Coordinator, and good academic standing. Students may not enroll in ENG 999 before their last quarter of coursework in the M.A. in English Composition. The exam is offered only in Fall and Spring Quarters, not in Winter.

Please note that permits merely allow you to enroll a given course; you must still pay your fees and enroll in the course through TRACS or WebReg, and meet all deadlines. If you enroll but do not pay fees on time, you will be dropped from the classes in which you enrolled; this will also cancel any permits to enroll issued for those classes (so you will have to request them from us again).

5. COURSE LISTINGS: A listing of graduate courses for both the current and upcoming academic years are usually available on the M.A. program's website, updated with recent changes; don't forget to refresh your browser to see the most recent version. Descriptions of topics courses the upcoming quarter are also available on the main English Department website.

Finally, please remember you are all welcome (and indeed encouraged!) to contact your coordinator for advising at any stage in the program; we also encourage you to regularly access the information on the website and subscribe to ENGMA, as many of your questions can be efficiently answered that way.
