Requirements for Completing a Dual Concentration
In order to complete a dual concentration in the M.A. in English Composition, you must fulfill the following requirements:
1. Before declaring a second concentration, complete a minimum of 20 units of coursework in a single concentration in the M.A. program with a minimum GPA of 3.5 in this coursework.
2. Notify the graduate coordinators of both concentrations of your intention to pursue the dual concentration.
3. To add a concentration in TESL to a concentration in Composition or Literature, or to add a concentration in Composition or Literature to a concentration in TESL, file a Graduate Change-of-Major form with the Records Office on the first floor of University Hall. On this form, you should specify that you are adding a second concentration and keeping your first concentration. To add a concentration in Literature to a concentration in Composition, or a concentration in Composition to a concentration in Literature, meet with the coordinator of your current concentration for advising; she will request the change to your student record.
4. Complete 66 units of graduate coursework in the M.A. program.
5. Complete all of the non-elective coursework under both concentrations (see the coursework lists that follow), with a grade of C or higher in each course and with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher in this coursework. If, after completing all of this non-elective coursework, you have not yet completed the required 66 units (see requirement 4 above), you must complete the remaining units with graduate elective coursework, approved in advance by the graduate coordinator of one of your concentrations.
6. When you are within 1-2 quarters of completing the program, file a Graduation Check for each of your concentrations (i.e., two Graduation Checks total) with the Records office on the first floor of University Hall.
7. Complete either the thesis (ENG 699a and ENG 699b) or the Comprehensive Examination (ENG 999).
a. If you are completing a thesis, it must be deemed by the Graduate Committee and your thesis readers to be relevant to both concentrations.
b. If you are completing the Comprehensive Examination, you must (a) take the on-campus component for your dual concentration; and (b) take the take-home components for both of your concentrations.
For Composition-Literature dual concentrators, the on-campus component is the same as that for single Composition or Literature concentrators, that is, two questions chosen from three questions related to the core courses (ENG 611, 612, 650). For TESL-Composition dual concentrators, the on-campus component consists of the TESL mixed examination and either the 611 or 612 question. For TESL-Literature dual concentrators, the on-campus component consists of the TESL mixed examination and one question chosen from 611, 612, or 650 questions.
Dual concentrators must pass both the on-campus component and their two concentration take-home components to pass the comprehensive examination with a dual concentration. If dual concentrators pass the on-campus component, fail one of their take-home components, but pass their other take-home component, they have a choice of one of two options:
(a) retake and pass the failed take-home component within one calendar year, and therefore pass the comprehensive examination with a dual concentration; or
(b) not retake the failed take-home component, and therefore pass the comprehensive examination with a single concentration (that of the take-home component that the students passed), and thus be eligible for the M.A. degree in a single rather than a dual concentration.
Please also consult the Examination Procedures Bulletin and the Comprehensive Examination Preparation Booklet (available from english.csusb.edu/grad) for additional comprehensive examination policies and preparation information.
